We had the insulated wire on the shelf so it didn't cost us anything to make it. We were able to get all the details worked out like reflecting plates, winding pattern, core geometry etc. on the cheap. The next generation uses lacquered magnet wire with three times the turns.

I was wondering why you don't use nylese coated transformer wire instead of the thick vinyl coated wire? Transformer wire would give better magnetic coupling as well as reduced space, making the magnetohydrodynamic magnet smaller and lighter.
